The Recital
I always feel that when Benny makes a legendarily outrageous boy of himself, it's great. Lydia and Dan, on the other hand, agonize and groan and whatnot. With that in mind, this week Lydia has plied Benny with herbal extracts, predominantly valerian. Today was the violin recital.

Let's simply point out that Benny let down his fans. He has justly established a reputation as the boy to watch in Academy of Music recitals. I enjoy his antics and so do his many other fans. Today there was nothing to enjoy except this....he beautifully performed the most difficult piece played by any 5-year-old in the entire Hampton Roads area...and he played it superbly while behaving like a normal boy who feared for his life if he behaved badly at the recital. Woooo!!!! That valerian is serious stuff.

Isn't valerian for insomnia? Benny sounds like a very bright little boy; playing the violin at five is quite extraordinary. And all children play up and show-off at times! So do adults, for that matter. There was a jazz double bassist called Johnny Hawksworth in Ted Heath's band who played really fast - he was the best in the world at the time. He invented his own gobbledigook language which he used to confuse people when they went on tour abroad and my husband says he used to play the fool and lie down on the stage underneath his double bass still playing! And then there was Dudley Moore! We saw him in concert - he was a brilliant jazz pianist but also a comic. He would suddenly start singing falsetto, try to kill an imaginary mouse on the stage, sit on the floor and all the time he continued playing. We cried with laughter and my husband broke his watch clapping!

Seriously, if Benny is slightly hyper-active, diet may be the trigger [see this page: http://www.allkids.co.uk/children-and-additives-and-sugar.shtml] Rather than valerian, try avoiding processed foods with E-numbers or synthetic food colouring and things like fizzy drinks, crisps, milk and milk products like ice cream, or anything with too much sugar. Also Omega 3 Fish Oil is excellent.

These are food additives which can be harmful and which may increase hyperactivity in some children. They all have a number which starts with 'E' and include colours (E100-E180), e.g., Tartrazine, Quinoline Yellow, Sunset Yellow, Cochineal, Carmoisine, Amaranth, etc., etc., also preservatives, acidities, antioxidants, thickeners, emulsifiers, flavour enhancers and sweeteners. In the UK, all these have by law to be shown on the list of ingredients.

Goodness, gracious. Sounds like something really special from Lucretia Borgia Catering.
Once a loooong time ago, I went on the Pritikin Diet for nearly a year. Besides losing a lot of weight, all my allergies disappeared, my arthritis subsided to bearable levels, I had no insomnia problem, and my jumpiness/nervousness/anxiety became manageable. I think the Pritikin Diet could be summarized as "No fat, no sugar and when you buy something, there should only be one ingredient in the package." It forces you to make everything from scratch so you never end up eating these weird sub-sub-sub ingredients found in processed foods. I would greatly benefit from going back on that diet...but I probably won't.
